Smaller registration plates now legal

When buying cars from American and Japanese markets, importers used to have problems with the size of the Polish registration plates, not fitting in the factory slots of the cars designed for the above-mentioned markets.

When buying cars from American and Japanese markets, importers used to have problems with the size of the Polish registration plates, not fitting in the factory slots of the cars designed for the above-mentioned markets.

The standard size of the Polish registration plates is 520 by 114 mm (the most popular version) or 305 by 214 mm (an option with two rows), whereas American and Asian equivalents are 305 by 155 mm in size. To address the problem of various sizes, some drivers would choose to interfere with the shape of the plate by bending it or commissioning companies to manufacture substitute plates. Both practices are illegal and punishable by fines and penalty points, even if the driver can produce a genuine plate.

Since July 2018, the situation has changed for the benefit of the fans of foreign cars. The smaller single-row registration plates adapted for the American and Japanese cars are going to be admitted for use. For the less popular double-row plates, the new law has been in force since January 1, 2018.

You can now find a car in the foreign market, import it and enjoy driving it without the need to worry about the small plates.
