What is the MSDS?

MSDS is a document that notifies users of possible hazards that may be caused by the substance/product to ship and of the ways of handling products to prevent related risks. The sheet also covers procedures to follow in the case of any hazards.

Every MSDS sheet covers 16 sections:

1)      Substance/mixture and business identification;

2)      Specification of hazards;

3)      Composition/Specification of ingredients;

4)      First aid measures;

5)      Fire procedures;

6)      Procedures for an unintended release into the environment;

7)      Handling and storage of substances and mixtures;

8)      Exposure control and personal protection measures;

9)      Physical and chemical properties;

10)      Stability and reactivity;

11)      Toxicological details;

12)      Ecological information;

13)      Waste management;

14)      Shipping details;

13)      Legal regulations;

16)   Other information.

From the perspective of international trade, the shipping-related Section 14 is the most important. It defines information related to shipped goods and substances as stipulated by applicable legislation for hazardous goods. This section contains, among others, details of methods, possibilities and forms of shipping, including all safety measures.

Based on the material safety data sheet, the carrier can establish whether they are capable of shipping a given product while at the same time applying all safety measures covered by the sheet.

An MSDS sheet is issued by the manufacturer or their representative or a product importer. It is a mandatory document and should be made available to anyone who is in contact with hazardous goods.
