The transportation of textiles has a long history. Back in the days, the silk trail connected China and Europe as a transport route for many products. The trail was used to transport silk, and the very route had the greatest significance between the 3rd century BC and the 6th century AD. From then on, it was gradually losing its significance and nearly ceased to exist in the 17th century due to the discovery of the sea route to China. Ever since, sea transport has dominated trade between the East and the West. Every year, tens of millions of containers come from one side to the other.
At the moment, the majority of global clothes are manufactured in Asia. Virtually everyone’s dress includes an item manufactured in that region. Poles are also happy to import and outsource their manufacturing processes to developing countries such as India, Pakistan, Indonesia and China. The reason is simple: costs. Wages are lower there, and efficiency – higher, which translates into very high competitiveness.
Since 2013, the concept of a new silk trail has emerged, namely a train connecting China to Europe. The shipping time has been cut down threefold, from 42 to 14 days. For cloth vendors in Poland, it is a very interesting alternative. In the event of inadequate stock of products, sellers can quickly place an order and obtain them in quite a short time. It is much faster than with shipping by sea.
